ACCEDE researchers have been working with communities and community organizations in Khayelitsha since 2005. In addition to researching the links between grassroots governance organizations and local government, an action research component has included assisting the Someleze Income generating project. The Somaleze initiative was spearheaded by Ina Conradie who works through ACCEDE as well as the Institute for Social Development (ISD). The women involved in the project aim to generate income through sewing, home based care and catering. ACCEDE runs an advice Centre from the Somaleze container in Site C. The Advice Centre offers a liaison point for communities to come in search of information on a wide variety of issues that affect their quality of life. In conjunction with ACCEDE researchers and the Somaleze women leaders, the advice officer and researcher, Pamela Tsolekile, offers advice concerning social development grants, accessing official documentation (ID documents etc) necessary for grants, and tries to link members of the community to specifically targeted officials in local governance structures in Khayelitsha. The type of assistance required is continually being documented to serve as a record of governance issues and problems faced at community level.
The advice office has grown considerably in reach over the last year and has show promise to provide a very necessary information point and follow up service for poor communities. In addition to providing assistance in Khayelitsha, further funding is being sought to expand the advice office to other areas where ACCEDE is conducting research ( such as Langa and Delft).
